Jekyll Island has all the makings of the perfect, much needed, woosah trip within a 5 hour drive from Atlanta. It is a magnificent place for the family or a couples’ getaway. You know you’re somewhere special when you are greeted with palm trees, turtles have the right of way, and EVEN the tollbooth is beautiful. As a matter of fact, upon arrival, leave your worries at the tollbooth. Something about old money and salt water that just soothes the soul.
With average temperatures in the winter that hardly ever get below 61 degrees, and over 85 degrees for majority of the year, Jekyll Island is a awesome get-away anytime of the year. It’s a great way for families to unwind from the day to day grind, but most importantly bond and create memories, especially with our guide. You won’t find amusement parks, long lines, timeshare presentations or tight crowds. What you will find is an opportunity to slow it down, kick back, discover great cuisine, and Southern hospitality at its best.
Accommodations on Jekyll Island
Jekyll Island Club Resort– This is the granddaddy of hotels on the island. It’s considered the heart of the island, and as you pull up to the resort, the valet greets you, and you feel like you’ve gone back in time and for most of us….another income bracket. The décor and architecture is dated from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s.
The Westin Jekyll Island– The Westin Jekyll Island is for the grown and sexy that prefer contemporary accommodations. The best part is that it’s right on the beach!
Holiday Inn Resort – The Holiday Inn Resort is very suitable for families with young children. Not only is it on the beach, but it also has an outdoor pool, playground and rental bicycles on site.
Hampton Inn & Suites Jekyll Island– The Hampton Inn & Suites has boardwalk access to the beach! It has a heated pool AND a kid’s pool. The best part is DRUMROLL PLEASE……FREE HOT BREAKFAST!! That’s one less meal that you’ll have to cover while on vacation!
There are only a handful of hotels that are actually on the island, and during non-peak times, you can definitely find deals on hotels. If you really want to get creative with your stay, check out the AirBNB offerings!
Transportation on Jekyll Island
Biking is a common mode of transportation while getting around Jekyll Island. Starting up a car and driving 2-5 miles away is too much of a hassle. You can bike ride along the beach, to dinner, or to the Turtle Center and not have to lock your bike. Money Saving Tip: Bring your own bikes.
Depending on where your hotel is located, walking is a great way to explore the island. Know your limits on how far you can walk because there aren’t too many Uber and Lyfts driving around the island to take you back to the hotel!
Food on Jekyll Island
Cuisine on Jekyll Island is appropriately reflective of its location. Considering it is on the water, you can expect lots of dishes that include food from the sea! Because its a tiny island, be sure to check the hours of operation when planning meals! Some of the establishment close early, but if all else fails, you can always order room service.
Tip: Prior to arrival pack snacks/ drinks to have available during your hotel stay. Remember it’s an island so remember the law of supply and demand. (Especially when Jr. didn’t eat all of his dinner because chicken nuggets weren’t on the menu…)
Here are a few of the offerings on the island….
The Wharf – Seafood/ Steak
Zachry’s Riverhouse – Seafood
Eighty Ocean Kitchen and Bar – Seafood/ Pizza
